These are real bubbles photographed while in the process of freezing. They are created using a custom bubble solution and traditional bubble wand at sub-freezing temperatures. A mix of science and art, the results can vary wildly based on temperature, humidity, and wind.
The process starts with sub-freezing temperatures, and bundling up to avoid the elements. I typically blow hundreds of bubbles during each session, as many pop before they freeze. Depending on the temperature, it can take anywhere from 2-3 minutes to 2-3 seconds for the bubble to start freezing. While the end result looks magical, the process is often fast-moving and requires a lot of patience.
I've been taking pictures since my parents first gave me a camera in middle school. A number of years ago I came across frozen bubble pictures online and fell in love with them. Through a bit of internet research, I learned a few bubble solutions and started testing the technique in 2014. Over the years, I’ve tested different solutions, wands, surfaces, times of day, and temperatures. Much of what I’ve learned has simply been through trial and error. I continue to try new things.
